      May 15 marks our return to the Barbican with Bach’s Art of Fugue. It will be our first time back since Antony & Cleopatra with The BBC Symphony Orchestra and Shakespeare’s Globe, conducted by Sakari Oramo. This production was remounted at The Hollywood Bowl with the LA Philharmonic led by Bramwell Tovey, and then at the Virginia Symphony Orchestra conducted by JoAnn Falletta. After 12 orchestras touring to raise the profile of the forgotten composer, abolitionist, and virtuoso violinist and swordsman, Joseph Bologne, writer Bill Barclay turned his story into a full two-act epic.  We workshopped this final theatrical version in 2023 at The Powerhouse Theatre with The Harlem Chamber Players, presenting it for two performances at the Martel Theatre in Poughkeepsie, NY.       In honor of Black History Month, we're taking this In honor of Black History Month, we're taking this opportunity to shine a light on an inspirational composer, violinist, and conductor, Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges! Joseph Bologne is widely recognized as the first known composer of African descent. Born in Guadeloupe on December 25, 1745, his father was a French plantation owner and his mother an enslaved African women. Bologne's father brought both he and his mother back to France, where they were able to live as free people. Bologne's father put him on an aristocratic education path, providing him a diverse education studying such subjects as music, literature, the sciences, horseback riding, as well as sword fighting and fencing. By the age of 19, as an extremely skilled fighter, he became a personal bodyguard to the King and bestowed the honorary title, Chevalier. While in boarding school, Bologne became a master at harpsichord and the violin. His musical journey began in 1769 when he joined the orchestra, Le Concert des Amateurs, directed by composer François‐Joseph Gossec. Bologne took on the role of director in 1773, when Gossec left the orchestra. Bologne debuted as a soloist with this orchestra in 1772, performing one of his own compositions. The music and performance demonstrated to the public that Joseph was a prodigy as both a composer and violinist. BStarting in 1773 before his death in 1779, Bologne's compositions were published starting in 1773, during which time he was extremely prolific writing string quartets, a harp concerto, violin concerti, several symphonie concertante, as well as operas. We celebrate Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges – master composer, virtuoso violinist, finest fencer in Europe, general of Europe’s first Black regiment and crusader for equality. An extraordinary artist of colour nearly forgotten by history.
